Harvard University Named a 2026 NEEBC Best Practices Award Winner

Harvard Transportation Services has been selected as a 2026 Best Practices Award winner by the New England Employee Benefits Council (NEEBC) for its redesign of the University's commuter benefits program.

Launched in spring 2026 on the Jawnt platform, the redesigned commuter benefit program replaced physical pass distribution with a digital-first mobility debit card. Participation grew 17% with nearly 6,000 employees joining in the first five months of the program. Because the program now supports pay-per-ride MBTA access, Amtrak and regional transit, parking, and bicycle expenses rather than monthly passes alone, it fits commuting patterns the old model couldn't serve.

"We wanted to build something flexible enough to adapt over time, but simple enough to deliver meaningful value to our community,” said Ben Hammer, Associate Director, CommuterChoice, TDM and Sustainability at Harvard University. “By making the commuter benefit model easier to use and more cost-effective, we've generated significant increases in both participation and user satisfaction."

NEEBC's Best Practices Awards recognize New England employers for excellence in benefits and workplace wellbeing. This year's selection committee described the nomination pool as one of its most competitive to date.
