Eligibility Criteria
You are eligible to participate in CommuterChoice benefits if you:
- Are an active employee of Harvard University
- Are paid directly through Harvard University payroll
Are classified as a full-time, benefits-eligible employee (working at least 17.5 hours per week)
Eligibility is determined by your official employment record in Harvard’s HR and payroll systems.
If you are unsure of your classification, contact your local HR representative.
The Transit Subsidy Program and Bicycle Commuter Benefit require that you do not hold a Harvard annual parking permit.
During any period in which you hold an annual parking permit:
- You may not enroll in or receive a subsidized transit benefit
- You will not accrue reimbursement credit under the Bicycle Commuter Benefit
Employees may not receive transit subsidies, bicycle reimbursement credit, and annual parking privileges at the same time.
Transit Subsidy Program
- Must be a full-time, benefits-eligible employee
- Must not hold a Harvard annual parking permit
Bicycle Commuter Benefit
- Must be a benefits-eligible employee or a member of the Harvard Graduate Student Union (HGSU) bargaining unit, paid directly by Harvard
- May not receive transit subsidies or annual parking privileges during the same period
You must remain in active payroll status to maintain eligibility.
Eligibility ends if you:
- Terminate employment
- Change to a non-benefits-eligible position
- Move to inactive payroll status
Eligibility is verified through Harvard’s HR and payroll systems. The University reserves the right to review eligibility, adjust participation based on employment status changes, and enforce compliance with University policy and IRS regulations. Misuse of commuter benefits may result in suspension or loss of eligibility.
For eligibility questions, contact your local HR office or the Harvard CommuterChoice program. For questions about student worker eligibility or HGSU bargaining unit status, contact the Harvard Graduate Student Union.
